This illustrates my method for roughing in the track.  I am not real concerned about up and down evenness here, I am doing this to check the alignment side to side.

When I am happy about the alignment I'll drop a plumb bob down to mark it's location on the ground.  The tree trunk of the white pine in the center of the photo was in the way in so many ways that I removed the tree.
